How to Breakup Well

Surviving and Thriving After Separation

When my marriage ended in 2009, there seemed to be no book which shared the emotional journey of someone going through it. I had to co-parent my three daughters and I wanted to understand how to navigate this difficult time.

My book, How to Break Up Well: Surviving and Thriving After Separation, is my story and the stories of others who have experienced heartbreak. It includes gems of advice from divorce coaches, family court lawyers, relationship experts and psychotherapists. I also write about relationships and how to get help when you need it, the culture of marriage and love, and to decide whether someone is right for you – do you stay or go?

In How to Break Up Well, Sarah Catherall weaves big-sis-style wisdom through her own experience of separation. Well-researched, packed with practical tips and relatable stories, this is for anyone on the difficult road to recovery from heartbreak. Highly recommended! — Karen Nimmo – relationship psychologist and columnist

How to Break Up Well is a book I wish I had read at the start of my own separation, as it truly resonates with my own journey. As a divorce, separation and co-parenting coach this book fills a big gap and is a super helpful resource for my clients. Well done, Sarah! It’s a page turner. — Kimberlee Sweeney – divorce coach

Writing is my passion

I write for a range of reputed New Zealand media: The NZ Listener, The Post, the Spinoff, the Stuff magazines and Stuff online; Vanity Fair, BBC and Radio New Zealand. During my 30 year journalism career, I’ve won awards, from a couple of Canon media awards to an Asia 2000 award. I’m not too bothered about those, though. My life is so much richer from the people I have met, and the experiences I have gained through journalism. I’ve been given an intimate glimpse into so many lives. I’ve had the privilege of meeting some interesting and incredible individuals, and the honour of telling their stories.
