I didn’t think I would talk about my breast cancer diagnosis as I didn’t want it to be my identity. But I put myself out there in the NZ Listener, talking and writing about my diagnosis and also to raise awareness about breast density, which I didn’t know was a risk factor. I hope that Te Whatu Ora adds density screening to mammograms so women with dense breasts know about the risk and they monitor their breast health. It feels misogynistic not to give women this information. I’ve been overwhelmed with feedback and it made my heart sing to get some lovely messages from other breast cancer survivors or women with breast cancer thanking me for writing this story. If you read this and want to make a submission to Breast Screen Aotearoa, please do. Our voices are powerful.
